General care of
stones
Cleaning, Clearing and General Care of Gemstones
Crystals and Stones
conduct both positive and negative energy. Before you use a stone it is
mandatory to clear all prior energies and restore the stone to its natural
balanced clear energy state.
Here are some
suggestions, however use the method that feels right to you.
Outdoor method:
Place in Sunlight**
(please consult the list at the bottom of this page - some stones can be damaged
by excessive sunlight). Lay your stones and crystals on a cotton lined tray.
Place in the sun for several hours. If you can place the stones close to natural
plants the clearing will be much more powerful. *Be careful wild birds are
attracted to the stones and small stones can be carried off by birds.
Moonlight or Rain:
Same method as sun
clearing, however stones can be placed on an inside window ledge at night in the
moonlight.
Sage
and Rosemary Tea Method:
Take few fresh sage and
rosemary leaves and brew a pot of light tea and allow it to cool to room
temperature. Place your crystals in a glass bowl and pour the cooled tea over
them. Let them sit while you are at work or overnight. This method works better
using distilled or spring water.
Smudge
Method:
pass stones through the
smoke of a scented incense such as sweetgrass, frankincense, sage or Dragon's
Blood. A incense blend of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme is terrific and will
restore, cleanse and maintain good vibrations in the room also.
Water Method:
place stones under cold
running water for 5 minutes. You can either hold the stones in your hands or
place them in a non-metal strainer. This is quick and easy but there are
drawbacks: some stones loose their coatings when they get wet such as Lapis,
Malachite and Sodalight. They often are stronger after this type of cleansing --
but they may get damaged faster.
Rain Method:
Stones really love t he
rain. Same as with sun method leave in the rain and allow to dry naturally in
the sun. This is much better than the sink method if the weather is cooperating.
Sea
Salt Method:
use about 1 cup of sea
salt to 2 cups natural spring water. Place the stones in the sea salt water and
let them sit a few hours. If the day is sunny, remove and let them dry in the
sunshine for a few hours, or if there are lunar stones, to lay in the moonlight
on a windowsill through the night.
Sand
and Soil Method:
bury the stones in moist
sand or soil. It is much better to place the stones directly in the earth - just
remember to mark the spot where they are buried!! Leave them buried for a full
24 hours. This method is especially useful for very negative energies or after
having tried all previous methods and the stones still do not feel balanced. Use
no wrappings, sometimes polish is removed doing this method. However, it will
get something clean.
Stones that are damaged
in Sunlight:
Aventurine: translucent
types often loose color
Amethyst: becomes paler
Apatite: pink variety
fades
Aquamarine: becomes
paler
Beryl: brown or orange
types may change to pale pink
Citrine: may change
color
Fluorite: green and
purple types change color
Rose Quartz: becomes
paler
Smokey Quartz: becomes
paler
Kunzite: becomes pale or
loses color
Sapphire: is much
happier in moonlight
Clearing and
Cleansing Your Stones
Crystals are basically low-maintenance
companions. They don't need to be fed or walked, and don't require trips to the
vet. They do from time to time need to be cleaned and cleared.
Clearing isn't the same as cleaning, although
both acts can be accomplished by the same process. Whether or not your crystals
often need to be cleared they will sometimes need to be cleaned. I recommend
immersing them in water for a minute or so, then gently drying them with a
towel.
Don't use any kind of detergent unless for
some reason grease has gotten on them. Detergents, even organic ones, tend to
leave a film on crystals.
Inner Dust
Clearing crystals is more an act of
getting rid of inner, psychic dust. Crystals are valuable in the technical world
because they record and store information. When we translate this role into
spiritual terms we say that crystals take in and store the vibrations, which
surround them.
This benefits us in that we are able to
program them to translate our desires and dreams into a vibration, which
attracts the energy, which will materialize them. Crystals, however, not being
us, don't discriminate between "good" and "bad" vibrations, and collect
whatever's around.
Making a Crystal Yours
When you first purchase crystals
you want to make them yours. You will want to erase or clear from them the
vibrations of all those who have handled them -- not because those vibrations
are bad, but because your crystals, in order to respond to your needs and
wishes, must be attuned to your vibrations.
There are times when you don't want a crystal
to have your vibrations, either.
If! you've been working with crystals to heal
emotional pain, your crystals may absorb these vibrations. The same can be true
if you've been doing a lot of releasing work.
If you've programmed crystals for specific
purposes, you'll need to clear them if you want to program them for new
goals/dreams.
Crystal Baths
One way to clear your crystals is
to bury them in sea or kosher salt overnight. Wash them afterwards and, if
possible, put them in a place where they can dry in the sun. You can get similar
results by using salt water, and this is a better idea for highly polished
stones, as salt crystals may scratch your crystals' surfaces. Immersing them in
salt water serves the dual purposes of cleaning and clearing.
My method is to fill bowls in filtered water
into which I shake some salt (probably the equivalent of two tablespoons per
pint of water.) I leave the crystals in the water overnight. The next day I
rinse them and put them out to dry. I prefer to let them dry by themselves. If
the temperature is warm (crystals may crack in subfreezing temperatures) I put
the bowls outside and let them dry in the sun.
Precautions
Although I've used this method for
many years without traumatized crystals, I think it's appropriate to say that
other people feel this is too harsh a clearing method. If you'd like to try this
method, use it with a few crystals and see how you feel.
Some crystals shouldn't be placed in water,
particularly soft stones such as azurite, malachite, rough chrysocolla, selenite.
I've heard that calcite shouldn't be placed in water, but I've done so with no
negative results. A variant on the sea salt method is to clear your
crystals by placing them in the ocean. I
recommend putting them in a pail unless you plan to give a gift to the sea.
Smudging
This is the least invasive and most
popular method for clearing crystals. You can use a smudge stick for this. A
smudge stick may consist of some of the following herbs: include cedar, sage,
lavender, juniper, pine.
Pass your crystals through the smoke -- or,
if you have arrangements of crystals around your house, pass the smudge stick
over the crystals. This method is excellent as well for clearing yourself and
your environment.
Cleaning/Clearing with Essential Oils
The relationship between crystals
and essential oils deserves an article of its own. My focus here is on
particular oils that have cleaning/clearing properties. The most economical
method for using oils is to place crystals in a container, fill it with filtered
water as you would for the salt water method, and put a drop or two of essential
oil into the water.
Lemon:
This has a purifying effect and, on a practical level, cuts grease.
Juniper:
Like juniper in a smudge stick, juniper oil has the ability to help release any
negative vibrations.
Lavender:
If you've been doing any kind of intense emotional work with your crystals,
lavender oil has a calming and balancing effect. Put some on yourself, too.
The previous methods can work well for large
quantities of crystals. The following methods are better for individual crystals
or small quantities of small crystals.
The Earth Method
You can bury your crystals in the
earth. (Do not use this method on iron-based stones such as hematite and tiger
iron.) This method can clear any rough energy from your crystals and give them a
kind of rebirth in the earth (from which most crystals are mined). It's like
taking them home.
Be sure to mark the place where you've buried
them.
Visualization
Close your eyes, relax, and while
holding your Crystal, visualize it glowing with white light or rainbow hues.
Feel it radiating smooth, balanced energy.
Reiki
Using Reiki alone or in combination
with visualization can be effective in clearing your crystals.
If you're Reiki! Level I hold the crystal in
your hand and simply Reiki it. If you 're Reiki II you can also draw the
mental/emotional symbol over your crystals.
How Often Do Crystals Need to be Cleared?
It depends on how much you use them. If
they're sitting on your desk, looking pretty (and you can get a great deal of
value just from having them around) once every three months is probably
sufficient in which case they probably need baths, too. Crystals you work with
every day need to be cleared no less than once a month.
If, as mentioned above, you do intense
emotional work with your crystals, clear them after each session.
If a crystal looks cloudy or has a dull
feeling it probably needs to be cleared.
It is always a good idea to clear a crystal
before you program it.
However, once you've programmed it don't
clear it until it's done its work.
Being with
Crystals: A Beginning
Meditation isn't the
only way to be with crystals. How you place them in your home or office is
another way of being in relationship with them, and there will be articles about
this in future newsletters. Programming, which I've written about, is yet
another way.
A fourth way, and one
which is a basic foundation for all other ways in which you live with crystals,
is to become familiar with them.
Getting to Know Them
Introductions should begin as soon as you buy (or in any other way receive) a
crystal. If you acquire several at once, get to know them one at a time.
In this process, it is
very helpful if you can temporarily put aside anything you've learned about this
particular crystal (even if its characteristics were the reason you got it). The
idea is to experience your crystal without preconceptions.
A helpful way to begin
this is to hold a crystal and close your eyes. I know someone is wondering with
which hand they should pick up the crystal. Traditional crystal literature says
that you should send energy with your dominant hand and receive it with the
non-dominant hand. I would recommend doing this at first, but as you become more
familiar with crystal's energies switch hands. It will help to train your
dominant hand to become more receptive, which could help in left-right brain
balance.
Vibrationally Challenged
While
we're on the subject of questions I know that someone else is saying, "But when
I pick up a crystal I don't feel anything."
Don't feel badly about
this. I don't see auras. For years I was ashamed about this, but I've learned to
accept it. My intuitional ability to "read" people is no less because of it and
you will discover that your crystals will help to balance your vibrations
whether or not you can feel theirs.
And take heart, I
believe that as you get to know your crystals you will have a deepening
experience of their energies.
As you hold your
crystal, then, do so, as much as possible without expectation. Breathe deeply.
The
article, "Meditation 101," gives more detailed instructions about proper
breathing. To summarize: your stomach should go out when you inhale and in when
you exhale.)
Rub the crystal between
your fingertips, hold it in the very center of your palm (the most sensitive
area). Become acquainted with its shape and its texture. (Since these are
sensations which you can feel really explore them.)
While continuing to
physically feel the crystal notice whether you are aware of any other sensations
in different parts of your body. You might, for example, feel something in your
solar plexus or at the top of your head.
If you feel drawn to
hold the crystal against a particular part of your body do so. Notice any
sensations, images, or thoughts you may have.
The
most important thing is to enjoy and appreciate whatever response you have to
your crystal.
The Visual Approach
Once you've gone as far as you can with touch open your eyes and look at your
crystal. Keep up the deep breathing as you study it.
Some stones might not
seem worth more than a 20-second scan. Hematite (which gets high ratings in the
touch-and-feel department) is one. However, because its surface is so
reflective, you may find that it's more hypnotic than stones which, upon first
glance, seem more appealing visually.
As you look at your
stone move it around. Hold it up to the light. If it has patterns follow them.
Without looking for anything in particular see if you notice anything
recognizable. (I have a rhodochrosite with an eagle on it and a malachite with a
four-leaf
clover.)
Focus on the stone's
color. Imagine that color filling you. Breath it in, fill your body with it.
(This is very good practice and preparation for chakra balancing.)
If you have a clear
quartz point or a cluster do all of the above, and then a little more. Unless
your point is perfectly clear there will be inclusions (pockets of air and
water), possibly points growing inside the main one, and perhaps rainbows in
short, a world
to explore.
Keep Them Nearby
You
will become more attuned to your crystals when you keep them on a bedside table
or on a desk where you work. An altar or circle of stones is particularly
beneficial for sleep, dreaming, concentration, and creativity. You may also want
to carry a pouch of stones with you throughout the day.
Above all, treat your
crystals with respect and love. They are gifts of beauty from the earth, gifts
of love.
Meditation 101: First You Breathe
Some of you who read
this newsletter may be experienced at meditating; others may have tried it in
the past, and found that they couldn't seem to do it. And some of you may have
convinced yourself that you could never do it, and have never tried.
When we approach
meditation with the idea that unless we immediately meet our guides and angels
and have a mystical experience disappointment will inevitably result. You
wouldn't take your first swimming lesson and expect to win an Olympic gold medal
the following week, and meditation is a kind of exercise which is similar to
physical forms in that you improve with practice.
What I am about to
describe is a very basic form of meditation which will teach you one of the
basic prerequisites: correct breathing.
In Comes the Good
Air
Many years ago I
learned that I didn't breathe naturally. In natural breathing the solar plexus
expands on the inhale and contracts on the exhale. Most people do the opposite,
which increases, rather than releases, emotional tension.
Babies breathe
naturally, but most children learn that shallow breathing seems to reduce
feelings of emotional pain. The next time you get very upset observe your
breathing. Are you holding your breath; are you trying not to feel? (This is
especially obvious when people are afraid.)
The emotions we try
not to feel don't go away, though. They accumulate in the form of stress and
tension in the solar plexus, where they can cause all sorts of physical
ailments, such as asthma and ulcers. Shallow breathing also depletes our intake
of oxygen, which can cause anxiety.
Relearning how to
breathe is the first and most important step in releasing stress. Try practicing
natural breathing for five minutes a day. Imagine your breath rising from your
feet and traveling up your body to the top of your head as you inhale. On the
exhale feel your breath descending again to your feet.
Do this also whenever
you feel yourself getting tense. Lean back in your chair and just breathe.
Beyond Breathing
Gradually increase
the amount of time you spend on this breathing exercise. You may want to put on
a favorite piece of classical music while you do so.
Once you feel
comfortable with the basic breathing exercise you'll find that it creates a
relaxed mood which is conducive to problem solving. (Remember, you're increasing
your oxygen supply, which stimulates the brain.)
Maybe you need to
come up with a creative way of doing something. Focus on it, think about what
you hope to accomplish; then concentrate on your breathing. Allow your thoughts
to wander. Don't automatically dismiss any idea, however ridiculous it initially
seems; your imagination doesn't like to be rejected any more than you do. If no
solution immediately emerges tell yourself that one will; then let it go. An
idea may surprise you later on.
The relaxation method
can help you in conflicts with others, especially when you're angry at them.
It's important to feel anger and equally important to know when to let go of it,
to realize that it tenses the body, tightens the jaw, and often conceals the
heart of your feelings. When you get relaxed you may find that you're also
feeling taken for granted, invalidated, betrayed, vulnerable. Once you've
allowed those feelings, try to imagine how the other person might feel. Focus on
resolution rather than on being right.
You can use this
procedure when you're in conflict with yourself, when you're trying to choose
between Choices A and B. Imagine each choice fully, noticing what feelings arise
with each, and which choice calls up the most positive feelings.
The more regularly you
practice this relaxation technique the more readily you'll be able to apply it
in a crisis situation. After using it you may not feel ready to take on the
world, but you'll be more at peace with yourself and ready to go into deeper
states of meditation.
Programming Crystals
It is
possible to program your crystals or other stones to hold a
message, work for a specific
purpose, to broadcast an affirmation, emotion or energy frequency, enhance
protective filters, promote clear communication, deepen meditation and healing
work and for an almost infinite number of other purposes.
Before you program a crystal for
any purpose you should determine that the crystal agrees to and is in accord
with your intended program. Some crystals have already got a firmly set memory
and purpose. These stones are not appropriate to use for your own programs.
Before we had computers we
sometimes called this process "enchanting" the stones.
Your programs can be either
autonomous or activatable.
Autonomous programs either broadcast the program continuously or activate
automatically when needed.
Activatable programed stones are held and mentally activated by intention,
request/command or when a pre-designated time or situation /condition occurs.
Crystals programmed in answer to
healing requests usually have autonomous programs.
Programs for correcting bad habits
such as smoking and programs for protection or improving an ambient atmosphere
and for general manifestation or projecting affirmations are usually
autonomous.
An activatable programmed crystal
might be used for connecting with your high self, sending energy to someone in
labor ( programmed ahead to activate when labor begins ) to deepen meditation or
enhance sleep, to help your memory while taking a test or for any purpose that
you do not need constantly.
Many people think of the word
programming as meaning to impose your will on the stone.
This idea is incorrect. The first
key and requirement for any kind of programming is that the crystal or stone be
in agreement. The stone chooses to accept a program or in fact invites you to
work with it in that way. Any program should be in accord with the innate
purpose and energy of the stone. You could call it asking or mutual attunement
or even use the older term, enchantment. Never program a stone that does not
choose to work with you in this way and for the purpose needed. The programming
part is a way to connect the person with the particular natural energy and
purpose of the stone or to fine tune an affirmation. Use intuition, meditation
or a pendulum or other tool to help you determine if the stone is in accord with
your intended program.
I received the crystal programming
shakti energy from crystal deva in 1991.
One does not have to program
crystals unless you feel called to do so.
Its just one possible way of
helping to create a mutually beneficial relationship. You should have an
intuitive sense that it is suitable to program the stone for what you intend
before you do so.
After the crystal is cleared, hold
the crystal in your hand or touch it if it is too large to hold.
Open your mind to sense any
intuitive information about the stone. You may or may not become aware of the
Deva, the spirit or life force of the crystal. Greet that essence as you would
greet any other new friend and receive what impressions you can from the stone.
When you have gotten a sense of the
stone ( do not be disappointed if at first these impressions are vague, practice
will improve your ability to commune ). Think about what you want to work with
the stone for. Do you want it for general or specific healing? for protection?
To broadcast an affirmation? Examples are general healing, communication,
protection, and so forth. People also program or consult stones for more
specific purposes such as to treat a bad back, for confidence at an interview,
shield from negative energy etc.
When you have decided what you wish
to use a crystal for Seek a crystal that feels like it is in accord with your
intention. Ask the crystal if this is in accord with its current purpose and if
it is willing to carry this program for you. You probably get some sense of the
crystals agreement or lack of it. If you do not you will probably learn to sense
the answer to these questions in time.
A pendulum can be used to help
discern the answer, if you don't have your intuition active yet. If you sense
that the answer is no you might deepen your meditative communication and ask the
crystal what it wants to do or what work it will do. Be open to receive an
answer.
Your intuitive communion with the
stone may have already given you a sense of what purpose it is for.
If you do not get an answer set the
stone aside and come back to it some other time.
Most stones are probably best
programmed for a general range of function such as healing rather than a very
narrow range.
Often if you have a lot of crystals
you can just announce what you need a crystal for and you may sense an intuitive
response from a crystal or will be attracted to a specific crystal or crystals,
which are in accord with your desired purpose.
This process of choosing and
meeting the stone and agreeing on the purpose is in some cases all that needs to
be done a verbal affirmation of the agreed upon purpose is normally made aloud
in your own words.
Once
you become familiar with this process it can be done very swiftly.
For the following technique you may
want to write your program out before hand The rules for affirmations apply,
keep it present tense and use positive words only the universe ignores negative
terms, programmed crystals are not to be used for dishonest purposes, you cannot
use a crystal to make someone love you. Action and results follow attention and
thoughts; focus on the result you want.
The following is the technique I
have found to be very effective and far simpler than many programming methods.
The Technique
Once
you have selected the right stone and sensed agreement.
ground and center yourself. Clarify
your intention, hold the stone in your dominant hand or in both hands. Large
stones can be touched rather than held.
Focus your intention on the stone.
Clearly state in your mind or out loud what it is you are programming the stone
for. Visualize the desired result as clearly as you can if appropriate. To
program a stone to broadcast an intention, prayer, desire or affirmation or
healing energy you just intend that it do so.
One to five minutes is the standard
time to hold the focus, though it can be much shorter continue until you feel
that the crystal holds the program.
Using a shakti can also shorten the
time (you would run it as you hold the focus ).
The program vibration is now set in
the crystal.
You may
add an ending intention that the program is locked in and will stay until
cleared some people breathe deeply and exhale strongly over the crystal while
they focus on the program.
Some people renew or refresh the
programs from time to time.
You can intend that it activate
only when you hold it or when you call on it or have it be constantly active,
depending on the purpose you are programing or dedicating it for.
When you activate an activatable
program you just intend to run it. You may find it more effective to hold the
stone in your non dominant hand to receive energy/messages from the crystal and
in your dominant hand to program or to amplify sending a program or healing
energy.
Stones do not have to be held to be
activated. Stones programmed for a personal effect are usually carried or placed
nearby. Place the crystal under a pillow for dream programming for example.
Stones that broadcast
affirmations, manifestation programs or atmospherics such as a call to mental
alertness or for calm can be set in a window or on a table, or where ever it
feels that they will not be disturbed excessively. I have read many books that
state that how far a given crystal can project its program is directly related
to its size.
This has not been my experience at
all. I have used small crystals for big programs quite often.
I strongly recommend programming a
single terminated quartz crystal to help facilitate your connection and
awareness of your high self and/or companion Angel and carrying it with you.
You can hold this stone while
meditating. You can also use a programmed stone to run/receive energy shakti
from your High Self or Solar Angel.
The Crystal connection empowerments
and other crystal attunement systems include shakti for this but I think most
people can connect with their own high self and request this. Stones programmed
for channeling High self, Angel shakti,
or attuning you to harmony with
Divine will cannot usually be amplified or combined with other programs or
shakti.
If you do not have a particular
stone or crystal that you need for a particular purpose you can use a singly
terminated quartz crystal and ask/intend that it be charged to act as the needed
stone.
Tumbled quartz stones will also
work though sometimes the energy may be felt in a more diffused way.
Make sure that you clear any stone
you are using as an energetic substitute.
When you are done with it.. I
always thank the stone after use.
Quartz crystal is most often used
for programming. Most stones will work with you, but clear quartz is the most
versatile.
Keep your programs in harmony with
the natural energies traditional uses and your intuitive sense of the purpose of
the stone.
Program a loving stone like rose
quartz for loving, calm peaceful purposes a grounding stone for appropriate
purposes.
Singly terminated quartz crystals
are most often used though round crystals and other stones work quite well also.
It is quite important when
programming a crystal by intention that you are quite clear and focused on just
what it is that you do intend.
Even if you are using a programming
shakti you need to have your intention very clear and accurate. You might want
to write down your proposed program first and before you program a stone or
other object to promote a particular emotion think it through carefully.
When I was first learning to
program crystals I had a number of misfires which both demonstrated to me the
effectiveness of crystal programming and the need to understand exactly what you
are asking for, and to consider ramifications.
I once charged a stone with the
intention that it promote happiness in a large room and after a few days we all
became very irritated at the constant "Happy" energetic nagging. It was just not
comfortable or natural.
I also once programmed a stone to
promote sleep in a bedroom and it was so effective that it was virtually
impossible to do anything else at all in the room until the stone was cleared.
My love
life virtually disappeared. Even a plumber and a heater repairman were
struggling to remain awake to their great puzzlement.
You also need to be very clear as
to how your program might actually be interpreted.
A program intended to help you see
auras might instead help make your aura visible to others.
You may also be surprised by some
results, a stone programed to assist with other being communication was too
effective as I was flooded with information and emotions from animals, trees
insects and even a lawn.
Programming a crystal for mental
alertness and emotional clarity has not caused any difficulties so far. You want
to help not overpower. These cautions apply even more strongly to programs for
love etc. if in doubt don't do it!. Crystal programming is to be used only for
good and in
accord with your soul purpose. You
cannot and should not use these techniques to try to manipulate others.
When you wish to change the program
of a crystal clear it before reprogramming.
Some people use tiny stickers to
put a word or sign on a crystal so that they can remember what they programmed
it for.
People often program a crystal to
transmit a healing energy like Reiki for this they run the energy while holding
the intention that the crystal transmit the energy usually to a particular
person.
Most programs need to be in your
own words which is why I do not have a list of specific examples. It is
traditional that most programs include the concept that the work be in accord
with the highest good.
Practice sensing your crystals and
try out at least three different programs.
Magical
Stone Substitutions
This is a partial list of
substitutions for stones that you may not be able to obtain readily. Using
substitutions are just as effective. Please note that Quartz Crystals can be
charged with the magical attributes of any stone (Opals are another), through
your own visualization.

Crystal Consecration
ritual
Perform the following ritual on a night of the full moon to cleanse a crystal of
negative influences and to charge it with healing power. Begin by lighting two
white altar candles ( one on each side of the altar).
Place a small bowl or cup of fresh rainwater (or melted snow) and a dish of
sand, soil or salt on the altar.
In
the center of the altar, place a censer containing any of the following
incenses: frankincense, myrrh, nutmeg, patchouli, rose, saffron or sandalwood.
Take the crystal in your right hand and pass it through the smoke of the incense
as you say:
"By
the power of the Goddess and by the ancient and mystical element of air
I consecrate and dedicate this crystal as a magickal tool of healing.
Gently place the crystal in the dish of sand, soil or salt, and say:
By the power of the Horned God and by the ancien! t and mystical element of
earth
I consecrate and dedicate this crystal as a magickal tool of healing.
Sprinkle a few drops of water on the crystal, and say:
By the power of the universe and by the ancient and mystical element of water
I consecrate and dedicate
This crystal as a magickal tool of healing."
Once again, take the crystal in your right hand. Move it in a sunwise circle
around the flame of each candle as you say:
"By the power of love and by the ancient and mystical element of fire
I consecrate and dedicate this crystal as a magickal tool of healing.
May this crystal stone of power work for my good and for the good of all.
So Mote it Be!"
After the consecration ritual has been performed, cup the crystal between your
hands and allow it to harmonize with your aura and spiritual consciousness.
Breathe gently upon the crystal as you direct your thoughts and intentions into
it. The charged crystal will respond to the energy of your will.

Magical
Stones and Your Sun Sign
Copyright © 1999 by Kim
Rogers-Gallagher
Over many years of being an
astrologer, I've found that certain stones possess energies that seem
tailor-made for use by each of the Sun signs. So if you re feeling the need to
increase your personal power or bring out the most positive qualities of your
sign, take a look at this list, and try the stones I've mentioned. No matter
what you use, keep in mind that carrying or wearing any stone on the right means
you're projecting or sending out that energy, while using it on the left means
you're filtering what you receive or attract from your environment.
ARIES:
Red belongs to Mars your ruling
planet, so you'll love bloodstones, rubies, and garnets, which are all good
fiery choices. When you'd like to tamp your fire down a bit, try carnelian. It
promotes peace, harmony, and patience, but holds fire and lends warrior-energy
to the wearer. Now, your traditional birthstone is the diamond not a bad fit,
since diamonds are known for purity, and Aries energy is pure, too clean and
uncluttered by hidden motives. If your budget doesn't allow for jeweler's
diamonds, substitute Herkimer diamonds, long used as a stand-in.
TAURUS:
There's nothing you like more than
a great big chunk of polished perfect rock of any kind. The stones that are best
for you are lapis, that gorgeous blue stone that's laced with flecks of gold,
and rich, fertile Jade. The emerald is your traditional birthstone. Emeralds
are the charming representative of both the earth element and the planet Venus
the building blocks you're made of. Its soothing color suits you since you're
spring-born. This stone is most powerful when set in copper, the metal that
corresponds with Venus.
GEMINI:
Since you so love variety, its no
wonder your birthstone is the agate. The agate is also associated with Mercury,
your ruling planet. It's an aid to truth telling and good to carry when you
want your words to be accurate. Although flourite is not traditionally
associated with Gemini, it's a natural match. Fluorite is connected to the air
element, as it keeps the mind keen. Stick it on the computer and pick it up when
you get stuck between paragraphs.
CANCER:
Your planet is the Moon, so the
moonstone is naturally connected to you. Its gentle energy protects against
absorbing the emotions of others. Sapphires have an affinity with the Moon, too,
and will magnify your natural instinct and psychic powers. Chalcedony (a
translucent, milky quartz) calms the emotions, and, like moonstones, will keep
away depression and sadness quite a boon for an emotional creature like you. Any
pink stone with soothing properties, like rose quartz or rhodochrosite, is also
a good talisman for Cancer. Carry or wear any stone on your left (the "incoming"
side) as a filter for the emotions.
LEO:
Like Aries, a kindred fire sign,
you love red, so when it comes to gems and stones, the royal ruby springs to
mind. Speaking of royalty, have whatever you wear set in that most royal of all
metals gold. Nothing suits a legend more, and gold has a long-standing link
with the Sun, your ruling planet. To increase your natural courage and help you
speak eloquently, a trait any performer appreciates, wear carnelian Amber is
also a good match for you, as it holds the life force your sign is famous for.
VIRGO:
Although the agate is one of your
birthstones the type that seems to Correspond best with your sign is the moss
agate, a lovely clear stone with feathery green threads running through it that
look like ferns. This stone is best worn while gardening, one of your very
favorite pastimes. Agates also promote good physical health, and health is your
business, after all. Your other birthstone, the aventurine, increases the
perceptive powers, sharpens the intellectual faculties, and helps to fine-tune
the eyesight something any draftsperson can use.
LIBRA:
Your traditional birthstone is the
opal, but there are other stones that can be worn or carried to help you achieve
your goal of finding and keeping that one special other. Any stone associated
with Venus, your ruling planet, will do nicely, such as lapis lazuli. This
lovely blue stone with golden flecks of pyrite mystically blends the energies of
Venus and Mars (the planets in charge of relationships), and is worn to soothe,
heal, and calm the wearer. Another good stone for Libra is kunzite, since its
specialty is attracting love.
SCORPIO:
Black is Pluto's color, and red
belongs to Mars, the planet that ruled Scorpio before Pluto was discovered.
These are the traditional power colors, and power is your specialty so these
stones will attract you most. Red stones like carnelian, jasper, and red garnets
appeal to your warrior side, and black stones ! fascinate you like apache tears,
black tourmaline, or hematite. To ground and protect yourself, use Pluto's
favorite stones, spinet kunzite, or rutilated quartz, which is perfect for
Scorpio since it's a stone within a stone, and, like you, is full of buried
treasure.
SAGITARIUS:
Sagittarius' most important goal is
to truly be a 'wise one," so sodalite is wonderful for you. It helps to gain
wisdom and to pass that wisdom back out into the world. Sodalite (and sugilite)
also calms the mind, and may help even Sagittarians settle down long enough to
meditate. Amethyst, ruled by Sag's planet, Jupiter, is another good match.
Itclears the mind and quickens the wit. You'll love both blue and amber topaz,
too, said to bring wealth and happiness to all December-born.
CAPRICORN:
Rock endures, and permanence is a
quality Capricorn finds all too rare, so you're quite fond of all stones. Most
books say darker stones are your favorites, like onyx, hematite, and obsidian,
because they're affiliated with Saturn, your planet, but try malachite. It
operates like a magnet when it comes to attracting a good deal, and if you carry
this stone on your left, you'll draw business success. Malachite also helps
heal broken bones, and since your sign rules the skeleton of the body, this
stone is a kindred spirit.
AQUARIUS:
Although your birthstone is the
gentle, peace-loving amethyst, your energies seem to blend better with stones
that conduct ideas, since you're an air sign, and communication is your
business. Aventurine is carried to enhance mental clarity and keenness, and
sphere, a greenish stone, is reputed to help with processing information. The
best conductor of all is clear quartz, however, so it's not surprising to find
clusters placed strategically throughout an Aquarian's home” especially around
the computer.
PISCES:
The color of any stone you carry
directly affects your disposition. So if you're feeling like you need to put
out a little more energy than you've got, toss a couple of red stones into your
right (or "outgoing" side) pocket. Red carried there gives our personal
presentation a fiery Uplift." As far as birthstones go, the amethyst has always
been yours, and appropriately so: these gentle lavender crystals lift the
spirits protect you from addictions, and aid in good judgment. Suglite has also
been used, just lately, as a birthstone for Pisces. It's a relatively new stone,
but it seems to bestow psychic awareness and is said to make the wearer wise.

How to Use
Crystals in Your Everyday Life
In all the applications mentioned
in this work, the crystals are described in configurations of three, each
balancing the other two and enhancing their power. To get the most out of the
crystals, I would recommend you carry them with you in a pouch made of cotton,
leather or silk. When using crystals for aiding in the business world or with
personal health, carry them around the lower portion of the body. When using for
emotional well being or spiritual growth, I would recommend carry them close to
the heart, or at least the upper body. Carry your crystals for as long as you
feel you need to. Always trust your inner feelings about how your crystals will
work best with you. Every person vibrates slightly differently.

Healing Crystals for Stress
Crystals for Healing Stress
Stress is unavoidable in any society and is a symptom of our
inability or ineffectiveness to accept change as fast as it seems
thrust upon us. We must adapt quickly to disappointments, shock and traumas,
physical pain, and other tremendous emotional and psychological imbalances in
our environments. It isn't easy to keep up with the changes!
Crystals are particularly good at helping us adapt to changes in energy
frequencies created through stressful situations.
There
seems to be a crystal for every form of stress including financial (Citrine),
relationships (Rose Quartz) and burnout (Smokey Quartz).
Having
a large crystal in a room can also help reduce stress, by reducing negative
energies and harmonizing imbalanced energy patterns.
By
wearing the crystals through out the day, preferably as a full necklace, as a
pendant, or in a small pouch at the Heart Chakra; the vibrations of the crystals
will continue to affect areas of the imbalance, restoring a positive state where
the imbalance has occurred. The effects of crystal healing at the emotional and
psychological levels are subtle, yet are often noticed more by others than
yourself! I have listed ten crystals and gemstones that are useful in healing
stress.
Ten
"Stress Stones"
Amethyst
Keep an
Amethyst cluster at your desk or in your therapy room to transmute negative
energy. Amethyst helps you think and act at your highest level. It's good for
promotions (spiritual), and reduces tension headaches. Wear an Amethyst pendant
continuously for migraine prevention and for alleviating arthritic pain.
Citrine
The
"Success Stone" - Citrine encourages a bright outlook and
happiness. It attracts wealth and joy. Keep a piece in your wallet to enrich
your holdings. It can help stabilize emotions and soothe family problems.
Citrine is also good for improving stress-related digestive problems.
Clear Quartz
Clear Quartz can be worn as a crystal pendant to deflect radiation from
going to your body. Quatrz is an excellent general physical system fortifier and
protector. It increases mental clarity. Hold a clear crystal at your solar
plexus and breathe evenly for several minutes to calm your emotions, to relax
the body, to clear the mind, and to refresh your energy. Stare into the crystal
to clear writer's block and to increase creativity.
Fluorite
Fluorite - a stone to unblock stuck energies. For digestive systems problems
use the yellow/green colour combination. For pains in the skeletal and muscular
system, use the blue/white color combination. For head area complaints, use the
purple/clear combination. For asthma, wear the green colored Fluorite. To help
congested mental thoughts, use a purple cluster in your work area, or position a
cluster at your crown chakra while sleeping.
Garnet
Garnet - An energy revitalizer. Garnet is excellent for strengthening the
base chakra. It promotes sexual energy (for your self and partner). It helps
increase circulation to the legs and pelvic area. It reduces menstrual pain when
held or taped over the ovaries and uterus. Garnet can increase sexual
stimulation and fertility too!
Hematite
"The
Anti-Stress Stone". Hematite reflects back negative energies to the sender (so
you don't end up taking them on yourself). Hematite dissolves the issues when
one meets with confrontation. Tape a small piece over the leg and back areas to
reduce pain and to increase electromagnetic circulation. Hematite helps balance
the meridians.
Malachite
Malachite is excellent for Type A personalities and for those prone to heart
disease and stresses to internal organs. It helps to detoxify the liver and to
increase blood circulation. Malachite is excellent for breaking up old energy
patterns. Use it with Rose Quartz to soften the effects of a broken heart! Due
to the possibly toxic copper content of this stone, keep Malachite away from
pets and children, and do not wear it against the skin for long periods of time.
This stone is for external use only.
Rose Quartz
"The Love Stone" - Rose Quartz is very protective and soothing for many
issues. Place a large chunk of the stone at your Heart Centre for 15 minutes to
relax after a stressful day. Rose Quartz helps to unblock anxiety and to promote
healing of private emotional issues. It allows one to become more receptive and
open to challenges.
Smokey
Quartz
Smokey
Quartz is an excellent stabilizer for mood swings. It helps ground feelings of
depression, and both absorbs and transmutes negativity. This stone is best worn
at the solar plexus, the seat of the emotions. Smokey Quartz is excellent for
PMS and cranky persons; and good for persons imbalanced due to extreme stress
and burn-out. It provides a protective field for recovery.
Turquoise
"A
Stone of Protection" - Turquoise is an excellent toner for all
systems of the body. It helps prevent organs from absorbing toxins and breaking
down. Wear this stone at the throat to strengthen your will and to communicate
effectively. It helps to sweeten the voice and speak your truth. Turquoise helps
reduce premature aging.
Some Hints On Crystal Healing
Your commitment to the crystal is part of the healing process. Let the
crystal do the work for you.
It is best not to wear more than two crystals at any one time if you are new to
crystal healing, as many find the effects too distracting.
The length of time to obtain the effects desired will depend on the quality of
the crystal (size, color, energy charge), location worn, duration worn, and the
crystal's appropriateness to your healing issue. Some crystals are better suited
to the overall underlying problem than to just treat superficial symptoms.
Select your crystal with an honest outlook on the problem.

Goddess
Correspondence Stones
This is
my correspondence list for Goddess stones. What do I mean by this? These are the
stones I use as a representation of the Goddesses in Magickal workings. I have
included a number of well-known Goddesses and my personal correspondence stone
or stones for each of them. You might find some crossovers; most Goddesses will
have more than one stone, and this is okay. The Goddesses are in alphabetical
order.
I set
myself this task of creating the Goddess correspondence stones as a way of
reading more about the individual Goddesses and thinking about them. I was
already well-versed in the healing properties of crystals and gemstones and
wanted to do some more work on their magickal aspects without resorting to other
people's books. I found this a really nice way to learn more about the many
aspects of the Goddess and the stones.
I'd be
really happy to hear from anyone who has done some similar work. I am happy to
talk about the reasons why I have chosen certain stones for certain Goddesses.
I really hope you find this useful.

Simple Stone
Spells
Money And Prosperity
New Year's Stone - At sunrise on the morning of the New Year, go outside and
find the largest stone you can carry. Take this back to your house and put it in
a place of prominence. If you keep the stone in your house for a year, it will
be one filled with
prosperity. Replace the stone every year.
Luck
On the Fence - Rise before the Sun on the morning of the Spring Equinox. Find
several stones and place them on the fence posts that surround your property,
visualizing yourself, your home and life filled with luck.
Love
Stone Love - Go to a place that contains many water-worn stones. Look for a
large, flat rock while visualizing yourself being involved with the perfect
mate.
On this rock, mark with red ink two intertwined hearts. As you do this, keep
visualization in mind. When you are finished, bury the stone in the earth in an
uncultivated place.
Protection
The Five Pebbles - Go to a moving brook or stream. While standing in the water
and facing downstream, remove five small pebbles from the stream bed. As you do
this, visualize your need for protection.
As your hand closes over the pebbles, see them beaming out protective energies.
Just as the pebbles are hard and have weathered for eons, so too will they
strengthen your protective shield.
Now carry them at all times for protection. If you wish, place them in a small
pouch or a fold of cloth, or incorporate them into some form of jewelry.
Magical Intentions
Carry the stones in your pants pocket or place in a cloth pouch and carry with
you.

Carry the bag with you.
Black and White Stone
Divination
Spend a few minutes gathering stones.
Half should be dark and half of a lighter color. Place them on the ground
before you. Ask your question or keep it in mind.
Close your eyes and jumble the stones around for a few seconds; then, with your
left or receptive hand, remove one of the stones.
If
you picked a dark stone, the answer is yes or the prospects favorable.
If
light, then no.
Manifesting with Crystals
Very simply, manifesting is a method of 'programming' your quartz crystal to
help your subconscious mind to create something tangible in your life that you
may need. Notice that I use the word need, not want. There is a very big
difference! Before you proceed with any form of manifesting it is extremely
important that you examine your conscience and decide exactly what it is you
wish to achieve. Decide, in as much precise detail as possible, whatever it is
you need to acquire. In order to avoid dissipating the crystalline energies, it
is most essential that you only use your chosen crystal for manifesting purposes
only! Let me repeat once again. Need, not want, should be your main criteria!
First, hold your quartz crystal in front of you, with both hands. Stare at it
intently and visualize yourself and your intention together. You may now close
your eyes.
Bring into your mind a complete and exact image of whatever it is you wish to
manifest. Visualize as much detail as possible; concentrate as hard as you
possibly can and imagine that you actually possess whatever it is you are
manifesting. You are extremely happy and relaxed, secure in the knowledge that
your need has been met. Ake your time; 5, 10 or even 15 minutes, it doesn't
matter. Then, when you have finished, take a large deep breath, relax your body
and when you feel comfortable, open your eyes. Do your manifesting whenever
possible (morning and evening).
Crystal Grids
There
are different kinds of crystal structures that are called grids. There are so
many kinds and forms that we not going to be able to explore very many of them
at this time and will just begin with a general introduction and few simple
forms.
I
usually work with very simple grids rather than the more elaborate and esoteric
forms and do not find them any less effective than more elaborate grids or those
made with a lot of formal ritual. Your experience may differ from mine.
Some
grids are large structures placed on the ground which connects with the ley
lines of the Earth which are the planetary equivalent of the meridian channels
and other energy channels in people. All the crystal within the Earth can be
thought of as being elements of a huge grid.
There
are groups of people who go around placing crystals in the ground to restore the
Earths' crystal grid where they feel that it is broken or disrupted and other
groups who feel that this creates disharmony in the Earth grid ( I don't know if
they follow the first group around taking crystals out or not ). Stone
structures at centers of spiritual energy such as Stonehenge and medicine wheels
are also sometimes called stone grids.
Some
people call the layouts of crystals which are sat within or placed around and
over the body, grids. The star of solomon form of six crystals around a center
is among the most common forms for layouts large and small and for grids for
almost every purpose.
Placements of crystals in your home such as one in each corner can also be
considered a kind of grid. Some people include crystal grids as part of a
devotional altar. This use is not limited to one religion or spiritual path. You
may also see some photo manipulated images of crystals and/or crystal charged
artwork referred to as crystal grids.
These
may or may not be energy-linked with physical crystal grids we will discuss this
form in the mandala lesson. There are some examples of these mandala here.
The
Crystal Grids we will focus on are arrangements of charged crystals dedicated to
a particular purpose such as sending healing energy or focusing a manifestation
or for Earth healing or to bring in or broadcast specific frequencies of energy
into a certain area. They are a way of creating a continuous flow of energy for
a specific purpose on a larger
scale than by just programming a single crystal. They are often used to send
remote healing to others, as part of rituals for Earth healing or peace, for
manifestation procedures and broadcasting affirmations and personal goals.
They
are often used to magnify, focus and or prolong a treatment using energy work
such as Reiki. The quartz and crystal healing shakti from the crystal
empowerments can also be focused using a crystal grid or used to charge one.
Some
grids are made so that you can place food or clothes inside or on or near them
to clear and charge them. You can put a grid under your bed or massage table.
You might put a small prosperity grid in your cash drawer at work or put a grid
in your flower garden.
Some
grids are simple circles others are based on traditions of sacred geometry
and/or forms like the tree of Life, Mercaba, Aunk or even the peace symbol. Some
grids are simply a number of stones placed in parallel rows.
Grids
could sometimes be considered a kind of mandala although mandalas can be far
more complex than most grids. Mandalas are often used for personal meditation.
The placement of the stones is usually done in focused meditation for both grids
and mandala. Mandala are usually gazed at and meditated with, grids are often
created with intention and then left to
continue the work of transmitting energy for a particular
purpose.
There
are many ways to create crystal grids and individuals often have strong
preferences as to specific layouts. I am not even going to try to cover all the
different ways of doing grids here.
Some
people place grids directly on the ground or on a table, most are placed on a
plate, in an Abalone shell or gourd or on a tile or wooden slab or possibly an
altar cloth. Clay, glass, lead crystal and stone or crystal slabs or disks are
among the most favored containers or bases for the grid. Some people place the
crystals directly on the base surface others use sand, earth, small pebbles or
peat moss in the container. I have seen grids in which the stones were glued or
otherwise fixed to the base so that they could be hung on the wall and grids can
even be made as jewelry or sculpture.
There
is even a form where a real grid is made of copper wire and crystals are placed
on this, some of these are made large enough for a person to lay comfortably
inside. These are sometimes made as a floor for a large copper pyramid.
You may
also place the crystals on a paper marked with a diagram of the layout for the
grid or with a traditional sacred form such as the star of Solomon, the
Sephiroth, the infinity symbol or on or around an image of a symbol such as the
antakarana or a Goddess or an emblem of your spiritual path.
A piece
of paper with the purpose and/or elements of the purpose for which the grid is
being created and activated written on it is also common. Some people place a
small note under the central crystal. For a remote healing grid people may place
the name of a person who has requested healing energy or prayers under a stone
in the grid. They may dedicate each of the secondary stones in the grid to a
specific individual or aspect of the intended purpose.
People
choose the crystals used in the grids intuitively as well as by the traditional
use of a stone. Grids are often made with clear quartz crystals alone.
Other
grids use a combination of quartz and other stones and crystals and some may not
use clear quartz at all. Some use quartz and only one other kind of stone and
others may use a variety of different stones, some will be entirely of one kind
of stone and some may use dozens of different stones. Intuition, need and
purpose as well as what stones are available to you will determine what you use
in a grid.
The
most common are square or circular with a center stone. They may or may not have
linking crystals. Linking crystals are usually small clear quartz points placed
between the other stones in the grid to connect the stones and direct the flow
of energy. They may be used pointing either inward or outward from the center
and are also often placed between stones in the outer "wheel" or other form of
the grid.
Stones
are always cleared before being used in a grid and charged and dedicated as
placed and after placement. Intention is always used to set the purpose and
activate the grid. After the grid is created it is activated and the individual
crystals are linked energetically. This is often done with a crystal wand,
generator point or laser wand crystal or can be done with another kind of wand.
Many
people follow a carefully laid out order for activating the crystals in a grid
with a wand. You may wish to choose a specific "master crystal" or wand for each
of your grids and keep it with the grid or you may use the same crystal or wand
to charge many grids. The wand or master crystal is meditated with and charged
before being used to activate the grid.
Grid
activation can also be done with intention or with shakti. Some grid "systems"
place strong emphasis on the order that you place the stones and the order you
charge them, others do not.
Some
people set the intention that the energy of the grid into the center so that the
outside crystals set the purpose of the grid and the center crystal projects the
energy/program outward. This form usually uses a clear quartz center crystal
usually in a generator or transmitter formation if one is available. Links with
the center will usually point inward for this form. Double terminated stones can
also be used as links when you want a two way flow of energy or an inward and
outward pulse of energy flow.
Another
way the intention can be set is that the center stone provides either the
connection to the source of power or is chosen to set the main purpose of the
grid and the energy is projected from the center out through the outer stones.
Links with the center for this form usually are placed point outward. When You
point the stones inward it can also be for the purpose of unifying the varied
aspects of a complex situation. This style may use a different stone or a
cluster of crystals for the center. Most people do seem to feel that single
clear points usually create a more focused, possibly stronger energy field when
used in the grid center than a sphere or cluster or stones other than clear
quartz.
Grids
may be left permanently or until their purpose is fulfilled and are usually
recharged and dedicated fairly often. A specific schedule for this recharging is
impossible to set as it will vary from grid to grid.
You
will want to place your grid in a location where it is not easily disturbed yet
is accessible for recharging. Your grid may hold its charge longer without
recharging if it is placed in a location where it gets some sunlight.
One
thing that has become apparent as I did research for this file is that almost
every one has their own way of creating and empowering crystal grids. Some
people call on angels and ascended masters to charge them, some people chant or
recite poetry others just put the stones down and use intention. Some people
feel strongly that one form of grid is superior to some other form. Once again I
cannot give you a definitive way to create crystal grids like most of the other
ways of working with crystals probably all the methods work and what works best
for you will depend on your individual personality and preferences. Do meditate
and seek the permission and intuitive sense of which crystals and forms are best
each time you create a grid.
Some
Grids
The
square or pyramid grid is a flat representation of a pyramid and uses five main
stones one in each corner and one in the center It may be aligned with the four
directions and linked on the outer wall with a crystal between each of the
corner crystals these have been placed and charged counterclockwise in the
diagrams I have seen, although I learned to use a clockwise placement. You can
also place either double terminated crystals or two single terminated crystals
one pointing in and one pointing out between the center stone and the outer
corner stones.

on the market, for example Ametrine, Ammolite and Aventurine. You may ask where
did these Crystals come from all of a sudden....did they just poof into
existence? Yes in a way. Until a few years ago man did not have the capability
to quarry these stones. The veins were either just too deep or the depth of them
was coupled with such extreme heat that mining was impossible. But thanks to
technology (snicker) we now have them at our disposal.
The
problem is this: Yes all Crystals will have metaphysical properties to them but
if we only started to mine them a few years ago it is highly doubtful our
Mystical ancestors had access to them. Therefore you will not find them listed
in any of the old texts. In addition care must now be taken to insure what you
are purchasing is natural and not man made. All Crystals start as clear.....it
is the amount of heat, radiation and iron content that creates the color.
Colored crystals are now being created by man that are almost impossible to tell
from the "real thing". I'm sorry to say that many a newbie to crystals are being
tricked by the fakes. And a fake Ametrine does not hold the Magical properties
of the true crystal. With Ametrine the trained eye can spot the "real" from the
"fake".....a natural stone when held up to the light will show what appear to be
little air bubbles trapped inside. They are actually trapped gas bubbles from
when the stone was molten. A Fake when held up to the light will show a "clear"
crystal inside which will be either crystalline or teardrop in shape. This is
the seed crystal which the fake was grown.
There
are many beautiful natural Crystals available today. Though our ancestors did
not have access to them does not mean we should not utilize them. What becomes
important is the color; all crystals of the same color hue hold similar magical
properties. Below are links to Crystal Properties by color.
